When it comes to transforming a yacht’s interior, few design firms have the depth of experience and reputation of Bonville Associates. Lauren and Cindy speak about their approach, their advice for brokers and owners, and how they balance style, functionality, and the yacht’s heritage in every project.

Q: A lot of your work comes through yacht broker referrals. What key advice would you give brokers when helping their clients select an interior designer for a yacht project?
Lauren: Research is essential. Brokers should take the time to review a designer’s previous work and ensure their aesthetic aligns with the owner’s taste. Not every designer is suited for yacht interiors. Experience in marine and/or yacht design is crucial because a yacht refit is a complex, highly technical undertaking. A designer familiar with the unique challenges of yachts can guide the client through material selection, spatial planning, and regulatory considerations, helping avoid costly mistakes.
Cindy: The designer’s reputation within the industry also matters. Brokers can leverage their network to get a sense of how designers perform in real-world projects. Communication skills, professionalism, and the ability to collaborate with shipyards, vendors, and captains are all important qualities that contribute to a smooth refit.

Q: From your perspective, what are the most important questions a new yacht owner should ask before beginning a refit or a design project?
Cindy: First, owners should understand what can realistically be accomplished within their budget and which changes will have the biggest impact. It is tempting to try to do everything at once, but prioritizing upgrades ensures the project delivers the most value.
Lauren: Timeline is another critical question. Owners need to know how long the project will take from start to finish and how that fits into their usage plans. A clear understanding of the scope of work sets expectations and helps avoid surprises down the road.

Q: What is your approach to refreshing an interior while maintaining the yacht’s original character or build pedigree?
Lauren: We start by paying close attention to the vessel’s existing details and incorporating them into the new design. Structural elements, distinctive woodwork, or architectural features can often be highlighted or reimagined in a way that feels fresh but still honors the yacht’s heritage.
Cindy: We also give new life to existing items through refinishing or reupholstering. This approach preserves the soul of the yacht while allowing for a modernized feel. It is a careful balance between respect for the original craftsmanship and updating the space for contemporary tastes.

Q: Do you find that clients’ tastes have shifted in recent years?
Cindy: Definitely. In the past, clients often favored more traditional interiors with silks, fringe, and abundant throw pillows. Today, there is a clear preference for lighter, more relaxed spaces.
Lauren: A perfect example is our work on Summerdance. Comparing the interior we designed for these same owners aboard their yacht Seahawk in 2001 with this project, the difference is striking. They moved from rich earth tones and an ornate style to off-whites and navy blues with a calm, open feel that is modern but timeless.

Q: What are some common design mistakes owners make when refitting a yacht, and how do you help them avoid those pitfalls?
Lauren: One of the biggest mistakes is not hiring an experienced yacht designer from the start. Many owners attempt a refit on their own or hire someone without yacht experience, only to discover that managing a yacht project is far more complex than expected.
Cindy: Another common error is prioritizing aesthetics over function. Removing bulkheads or cabinetry to create more open space may seem appealing, but it often eliminates crucial storage and conceals essential equipment. We help owners understand the interplay between design and functionality to ensure the yacht remains both beautiful and operational.
Lauren: Our goal is always to guide clients through a seamless, thoughtful process that balances style, comfort, and practicality. A successful yacht interior is not just about what looks good, but how it enhances life aboard the vessel.
